Astrology and pets: what the stars say about your furry friends
OCTOBER 4, 2021
Happy World Animal Day! What better moment to explore the magical connection between astrology and pets? Whether you want to know more about the Sun sign of your pet, your bond with animals or the best (and worst) times to adopt a pet, I got you!
Your pet’s zodiac sign
Ever wondered why your cat acts like royalty or your dog can't stop barking at strangers? The answer might be in their Sun sign! Just like humans, pets strongly express the energy of their Sun sign. It’s so spot on!
Here’s a quick guide to the 12 zodiac signs as pets:
Aries: headstrong, impulsive, independent, energetic, will let you know what they want, seeks confrontation with other animals, hates being tied down, difficult to discipline, doesn’t sleep much
Taurus: determined, protective, fond of comfort, lazy, loves snacks, likes things to stay the same, loves to be rubbed and caressed, sleeps a lot
Gemini: intelligent, playful, social, loves toys, loves learning tricks, always on the move, “answers” you when you speak to them, changes activities quickly
Cancer: loyal, protective, moody, sensitive to their environment, strongly attached to a specific spot in the house, rather stays at home, changes in the routine upsets them, doesn’t respond well to strangers
Leo: energetic, playful, wants to be noticed, loves to be pampered, doesn’t like to be told what to do, loyal, jealous of affection shown to other animals or people by owner
Virgo: easy to train, intelligent, likes to be groomed, picky, loves routines, dislikes sharing anything with anyone, rather stays at home, knows how to communicate
Libra: follows you around, wants to sleep near you, loves being around people and other animals, loves to be groomed, gets moody when lonely
Scorpio: curious, stubborn, intelligent, mischievous, independent, will wander off on its own for a few days on some sort of solitary adventure, but will always return home, dislikes the company of other animals
Sagittarius: energetic, always on the move, enjoys challenges, wants you to take them with you when you go hiking or biking, hates being kept on a leash, rather stays outside
Capricorn: easy to train, calm, disciplined, self-reliant, will get the job done, possessive with food and belongings, rather stays at home
Aquarius: intelligent, has their own will, likes to roam, independent, lost in their own world, not the cuddliest
Pisces: sensitive to their environment and owner’s moods, loves being close to their owner, needs their own spot, loyal, curious, loves cuddling, sleeps a lot
My two bunnies Pikachu and Eevee are both Cancers. Their favorite thing is snuggling with each other in their hutch. Pikachu NEVER leaves the hutch and bites strangers who dare to pet him. Eevee often lays in front of the front door like she’s guarding the house. When I go on vacation, Eevee always gets so upset that she completely destroys the hutch. 100% Cancer vibes.
The 6th house: your relationship with pets
Now let’s flip the focus to your birth chart. In astrology, the 6th house is connected to health, the workplace, co-workers, routines and daily life. Since pets are part of your daily life (feeding, walking, snuggling), pets are also ruled by the 6th house. Having a closer look at the 6th house in your birth chart could tell you something about your relationship with pets. So if you’re wondering: Why do I attract so many animals? Why is my bond with my pet so healing or challenging? The 6th house can give you clues.
What planets in the 6th house say about your bond with animals
Each planet brings a different flavor to how you relate to animals:
Sun in the 6th house: If you're a pet owner with the Sun in the 6th house, you likely see your pets as a reflection of your identity. You're deeply devoted to them, viewing their care as part of your daily purpose and a meaningful responsibility. If you're drawn to working with animals, you may thrive in a leadership role, such as a veterinarian, trainer, or shelter coordinator, where your sense of purpose and dedication can truly shine.
Moon in the 6th house: If you're a pet owner with the Moon in the 6th house, you likely share a deep emotional bond with your pets. They may even serve as emotional support companions, offering comfort and a sense of security. You're naturally sensitive to their needs, and their well-being can have a strong impact on your own emotional state.
Mercury in the 6th house: If you're a pet owner with Mercury in the 6th house, you likely enjoy interacting and communicating with your pets, even if it's just talking to them throughout the day. Pets stimulate you mentally, so you may find joy in learning about animal behavior, researching care techniques, or engaging in training. There's also a good chance you’re drawn to small or intelligent pets, such as parrots, cats, or clever dog breeds.
Venus in the 6th house: This is one of the best astrological placements for having pets. You probably looove animals! You cherish their companionship, shower them with affection, and may even treat them like beloved family members. With Venus ruling love, beauty, and money, it’s no surprise you might enjoy pampering your pets or spending generously on their care. If you love dressing them up or entering them in grooming competitions, there's a good chance you have this placement.
Mars in the 6th house: You may be drawn to active pets, like working dogs or high-energy breeds, and likely have strong views on discipline and structure. Physical activities with your pets, such as long walks or training sessions, can be especially rewarding for you. On the flip side, you might experience frustration or tension when pets throw off your routine or don’t respond well to structure.
Jupiter in the 6th house: If you're a pet owner with Jupiter in the 6th house, you may have multiple pets or even feel like you’re running a mini zoo at home! Jupiter expands whatever it touches, including your love (and number) of pets. You're likely to spoil your pets with generosity, treats, and joyful attention. Even if you don’t currently have pets, animals seem naturally drawn to you.
Saturn in the 6th house: You may have been cautious around animals or even developed a fear of small pets during childhood. However, once trust is established, you often develop a strong sense of responsibility and take a highly structured approach to their care. You might prefer calm, well-trained, or older pets, or choose to adopt only later in life. Pets can teach you valuable lessons in patience and discipline, sometimes even becoming your greatest teachers.
Uranus in the 6th house: This placement carries a higher chance of unexpected challenges with animals, including the possibility of getting bitten or attacked. You may also be drawn to rare, exotic, or quirky pets with independent spirits and tend to take an unconventional approach to their care.
Neptune in the 6th house: If you’re a pet owner with Neptune in the 6th house, you likely share a deeply intuitive bond with animals. You may be especially sensitive to their suffering and feel drawn to volunteer or rescue pets in need. However, it’s important to set clear boundaries to avoid overextending yourself emotionally.
Pluto in the 6th house: If you're a pet owner with Pluto in the 6th house, you likely share a deep, transformative bond with your pets. You may be drawn to mysterious or misunderstood animals, such as reptiles, black cats, or stigmatized breeds, and can be intensely protective, even obsessive, about their well-being. Your connection with animals might also bring powerful opportunities for emotional healing and personal growth.
Chiron in the 6th house: Adopting a pet could be a deeply healing experience for you. The house where Chiron is placed often points to emotional wounds and long-standing disappointments. With Chiron in the 6th house, caring for a pet may help soothe those wounds, offering comfort, routine, and a sense of purpose in your daily life.
Pay attention to transits of Mercury Retrograde, Mars and Saturn
As a pet owner, you can minimize the risk of unpleasant surprises by keeping an eye on your transits. Mars or Saturn moving through your 6th house is usually not favorable. During these times, it's important to be extra vigilant about your pets' health. Regular checkups and early detection of illness can make a big difference. Saturn transiting the 6th house often coincides with pets requiring extra care, and in the worst-case scenario, it may indicate the loss of a pet.
Mars transiting the 6th house can also signal periods when pets may become more aggressive, stressful, or difficult to manage. The same goes for Mercury Retrograde in the 6th house, which can bring disruptions in your daily routines related to your pets. For example, when Mars moved through my 6th house, my pets often made a lot of noise at night, to the point I was severely deprived from sleep for several weeks. As soon as Mars moved to the next house in my chart, my pets were as sweet as honey. Coincidence? I think not.
The best (and worst) times to adopt a pet
If you don’t have a pet yet or are thinking about adding another furry friend to your family, it’s wise to keep an eye on your transits. A great time to adopt a pet is when the Sun, Venus, and/or Jupiter is transiting your 6th house. Another favorable window is when these same planets form a trine or sextile to any natal planets in your 6th house or to your 6th house ruler.
On the flip side, it's best to avoid adopting a pet when transiting Mercury, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto makes a hard aspect (square, opposition, conjunction or inconjunction) to planets in your 6th house or its ruler. As mentioned earlier, Mars or Saturn transiting your 6th house may also signal a more challenging time for pet adoption.
The day I adopted my bunnies, the transiting Sun was on the exact same spot as my natal Venus in my 6th house. I had not planned this at all and only noticed the conjunction a few months afterwards. Looking back there couldn’t have been a greater day to adopt pets!
